8-Frame vs 10-Frame Hive: How to Choose Your First Hive?

Choosing the right beekeeping equipment is one of the most important steps for any beginner.
What works perfectly for one beekeeper may not suit another, so it’s worth understanding the basics before you start.
Many tools and techniques in beekeeping can be changed later — for example, you can easily add or remove a queen excluder whenever you like.
But some choices are more permanent. One of the biggest early decisions every beekeeper faces is whether to use 8-frame hives or 10-frame hives.
In the United States, the most common setup is the Langstroth hive, built from a mix of deep and medium boxes, with shallow boxes used less often today.
Recently, 8-frame hive equipment has grown in popularity — and for good reason. It offers unique benefits compared to the traditional 10-frame hive.

You should choose to use either 8 frame equipment or 10 frame equipment. It’s very difficult to combine 10 frame equipment with 8 frame equipment. This is because they are not compatible with each other.
The way the Langstroth hive is designed is the beekeeper will add boxes as the bees need extra space, typically adding medium boxes. These medium boxes are also called honey boxes or honey supers, but a medium box can be used for any purpose the bees need.
| Pros and Cons of 10-Frame Hives | Pros and Cons of 8-Frame Hives |
| Pros: Standard in the U.S. → widest range of equipment and accessories More space for bees → fewer box additions Larger honey yield per box Cons: Heavier → a deep 10-frame box full of honey can weigh 80–90 lbs Bulkier and harder to move Less beginner-friendly if lifting is difficult | Pros: Lighter weight → easier to manage (around 60 lbs full) More comfortable for hobbyists, older beekeepers, or anyone with back issues Fits well in smaller apiaries or urban beekeeping Increasingly available from suppliers Cons: Less space for bees → colonies may outgrow boxes faster More frequent inspections needed Some accessories still made primarily for 10-frame |
We also started this beekeeping journey not knowing exactly which hives or equipment would be the best fit — and we understand how overwhelming those first steps can be. That’s why we’ve developed and selected high-quality beekeeping equipment to make your work easier and your experience with honey bees more enjoyable.
With more than 10 years in beekeeping, we know there is no single “perfect” way to keep bees. Whether you choose 8-frame hives or 10-frame hives, the Langstroth hive system allows flexibility — and success comes from trying, adjusting, and learning each season.

At BeesEdge, we currently work with 10-frame hives and find them to be the most practical and reliable choice for our beekeeping. That’s why we also offer 10-frame hive equipment for sale — tested in our own apiary, so you can be confident in its quality and convenience.
Beekeeping is a craft that never stops teaching — every season brings new lessons, challenges, and rewards. What matters most is moving forward with confidence. With the right tools and hives, like our 10-frame Langstroth system, every challenge becomes an opportunity and every hive brings its own reward.
If you’d like to start with the same system we use in our own beekeeping, you can find our 10-frame hives available here.
